Our journey begins in Copenhagen
In November 2023 we travelled to Copenhagen to meet Ion, the inventor of XYZ CARGO and founding member of n55.dk
This is when it all got real. After months of discussing the project, multiple zoom calls and a lot of planning we finally got our feet on the ground in Denmark. Our goal was to visit the city and then do a three day workshop to build our first XYZ CARGO TRIKE.
Copenhagen is a beautiful city filled with bicycles. When I stumbled out of the subway (which is directly connected to the airline terminal!) it was dark, 40°F and drizzling. I came out onto a city plaza and saw it teaming with cyclists. People young and old, families, dogs, workers, students, all riding bikes.
The next morning we did a lot of walking, soaking in the sights and sounds. Here we paused for a break (and to find a public bathroom). This scene captures the vibe of the city pretty well, bikes outnumbering cars here 5:1.
The cycling infrastructure in the city is complete. That means that everything is connected by either a separated bike lane or a clear indication of right of way. Supermarkets have bike lights in the check-out line. Buildings have ample bike parking, often with hundreds of bicycles parked in front. Children in pre-school take lessons learning how to ride safely through their city. Cars seem to understand that they are the guests on the road, with secondary, less prefered status. There are tunnels just for bikes, bridges just for bikes and many connecting bike paths along parks and rivers.
We spent a few more days exploring this amazing city by foot and by bike. We took an architecture tour, had lunch with Ion and his son and our first ride on the XYZ TRIKE. Copenhagen is an incredible city and the best way to experience it is of course on two (or three) wheels.
